George Rutherford

Area of expertise: HIV infection

Professor George Rutherford is professor of epidemiology, preventive medicine and paediatrics at the University of California in San Francisco, USA. (Epidemiologists study how common diseases are in different groups of people, and paediatric doctors specialise in treating children.) He is also director of the Institute for Global Health and head of the division of prevention medicine and public health at the university.

Professor Rutherford does research on HIV, tuberculosis (TB) and other infections, new treatments for these infections, and bioterrorism. He also does some work for the Cochrane library, which collects and analyses research to help doctors put research into practice.
